BUFFAL0は、フロッピーディスクなどの各種ドライブを読み込め、パラレル/シリアル/USBなどのインターフェースを持ち、あらゆるカードリーダー機能を持ったメディアリーダー/ライター MCR-D7I10U11/U2を12月03日に発表した。
MCR-D7I10U11/U2
「ある日、数年前に書いたテキストファイルを見たくなったことがMCR-D7I10U11/U2を開発するきっかけとなった。そのテキストファイルは5.25インチのFDに保存されていた。FDを読み込むために周りを見渡すと誰も5.25インチのFDDは持っていないことに気が付いた。過去のメディアに記録されたデータは、もはや取り出すことができないのだ。このことを社内の人間に話した所、同じような境遇にあるという意見が多数出た。であるならば、きっとユーザも同様に違いないと考えた」(BUFFAL0マルチメディア部門責任者 牛目留弧氏)
対応したドライブとしては、3Mode対応の 5.25インチ(70KB/140KB/160KB/320KB/360KB/640KB/720KB/1MB/1.25MB)と3.5インチのフロッピーディスク(320KB/360KB/640KB/720KB/1MB/1.25MB/1.44MB)、スーパーディスクと呼ばれているLS-120(120MB)、3.5インチMOディスク(128MB/230MB/540MB/640MB/1.3GB)とMO Rewritable/MO CCW Write Onceに対応している5.25インチのMOディスク(600MB/650MB/1.2GB/2.3GB/2.6GB/4.1GB/4.8GB/5.2GB/8.6GB/9.1GB)、IOMEGA社のZIPドライブ(100MB/250MB/750MB)、Panasonicが以前発売していたPDドライブ(650MB)と、後述するCD/DVDを合わせて、7ドライブ9種類のメディアとなる。ちなみに、5.25インチFDDの発売は、2001年03月以来だ。
「旧世代のディスクだけを読む込めれば当初の目的は達している。だが、我々は究極のリーダー/ライターを作ってみたいと思った。メディアやカードだけに留まらず、あらゆるインターフェースをも搭載した」(同氏)
背面にはSPP一方向モード、SPP双方向及びEPP1.9モードに対応したパラレルポート(IEEE1284)、シリアルポート(RS-232C)を持ち、全面にPS/2(キーボード/マウス)の旧世代インターフェスを始め、FireWire(IEEE1394)の6pin/4pin、USB規格のTypeA/TypeB/Mini-B(5pin)/Mini-B(4pin)を備える。
「7つのドライブを搭載したことによりMCR-D7I10U11/U2のサイズが大きくなった。どうせなら、この大きさを生かして、延長コードも内蔵して直接機器に接続出来るようにしてみた」(同氏)
FireWireとUSBには、オスとメスが用意されており、オスは巻き尺のようにコードを延ばして機器に接続することが可能だ。これらのケーブルは全面パネルカバーに収納されている。デジタルカメラに直接接続してデータを読み取りたい場合でも、付属のコードを使う必要はない。
「当たり前ことだが、メモリカードも全て読み込めるように対応した。PCカードからxDピクチャーカードまで全てが読み込める。携帯電話で使われているminiSDメモリカードやメモリースティック Duoも別なアダプタは必要ない」(同氏)
カードリーダー/ライターとしては、CardBus対応PCカード(TypeIIx2 or TypeIIIx1)、マクロドライブ/コンパクトフラッシュ、SDメモリカード/miniSDメモリカード/マルチメディアカード(MMC)、スマートメディア/xDピクチャーカード、メモリースティック/メモリースティック Duo/メモリースティック PRO/メモリースティック PRO Duoと6種類の口を持ち、13種類のメディア対応している。
「それだけではない。現在、最も頻繁に使用されているCDやDVDに関しても、全てに対応してある。メディアリーダー/ライターである以上、CD-ROMとDVD-ROMを除いて読み込むだけではなく書き込みことも可能だ」(同氏)
CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RWを始めとして、DVD-ROM/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD-RAM/DVD+R/DVD+R DLに対応した16倍速のマルチDVDドライブを搭載している。
各機能紹介
「恐らくここまで読み込めるリーダー/ライターは業界初だと思う。しかし我々はもっと上を目指す予定だ。MCR-D7I10U11/U2の上位モデルでは、8インチのフロッピーディスクや2.88MB/9.3MB対応の3.5インチフロッピーディスクドライブ、IOMEGA社のJazドライブ、Click!ドライブ、REVドライブ、任天堂のファミコンやMZ80Kシリーズで採用されていたクイックディスク、次世代メディアのブルーレーザディスク(Professional Disc for DATA)など、あらゆるメディアを読み込めるリーダー/ライターになるだろう。もちろん全SCSI機器のインターフェースも備えるつもりだ」(同氏)
将来的には「この世に存在する全ての記録媒体に対応する予定」と同氏は息巻く。便利といえば便利だが、不必要なものばかりという気もする。USB2.0への変換器としても使用可能だが、やはり無駄が多い感じは否めない。時代の流れで消えていったメディアの恨みが、同社を駆り立てているのだろうか。
MCR-D7I10U11/U2の主な使用としては、USB2.0に対応し別に電源が必要だ。Windows2000(SP3以降)/XPとMacOSXにおいてUSBマスストレージクラス対応している。サイズは147mm×226mm×168mmで重量は約3.1Kg。リーダー/ライター以外の機能はない。発売予定価格は74,300円としている。現在の所、同社のウェブサイト上にMCR-D7I10U11/U2の情報は記載されていない。
